‘Madurai Veeran’, is a Tamil folk deity popular in central and southern Tamil Nadu. In tamil, his name literally means "warrior of Madurai". Madurai Veeran folklore is an amalgamation of facts and legends. Veeran lived between 1608 CE and 1641 CE. He is worshipped as a guardian deity for the reason that he and his army bravely fought against the bandits who were terrorizing the people in and around the areas of Trichy, Pudhukottai and Madurai. Madurai Veeran successfully suppressed the banditry. Multiple versions of Madurai Veeran folklore exist. They differ significantly from each other.
