Fossil wood

The fossils are the recognisable remains of animals and plants which lived in the past geological ages and preserved in the rocks of the earth's crust by natural process. The huge fossil wood tree trunk displayed in the open-air garden of this museum was collected by the Geological Survey of India in Tiruvakkarai, South Arcot District, Tamilnadu, and the Geological Survey of India donated to this Museum. Its length is about 160cm. Breadth is about 40cm. and thickness is about 15 cm. The large area contains fossil wood in Tiruvakkarai is fenced by Geological Survey of India and maintained as Geological monuments. Sathanur, near Ariyalur is another area in which fossil wood occurs in Tamilnadu.
