KOTA – Artifacts

Artefacts made and used by the Kota ethnic people are exhibited here. They are over hundred years old. KOTA ethnic people are living in the Western Ghats situated in the Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu. KOTA language belongs to the South - Dravidian Language Family. Their population is over 3,000 in number.

Traditionally, they are an artisan ethnic group who are specialized in a variety of activities, namely, basket-weaving, pottery-making, carpentry, leather working, blacksmithing, silver-smithing and roof-thatching. A headman called as “Gothgern” leads KOTA villages.
