In Theni District Government Museum was inaugurated in the year Feb 26, 2021 in an area of 5000 sq. ft. located in the campus of Government Boys Higher Secondary School Play Ground, Andipatti. This Museum stretches over the floors and consists of political, natural, social, literature, cultural, economical and industrial history galleries.

Signature mark coins from Bodimettu and details about trader groups which used to trade all over India are displayed in political history gallery. Natural history gallery houses rare flora from Meghamalai as herbariums, rock, fossils, scientific explanation about earthquakes, tsunami are also displayed.

Details of 2000 year old menhirs erected in burial sites things used by Paliyar tribe of Theni District, Rock paintings in Marugamalai, Black and Red potteries and burial urns found from Kulappanaickanpatti adorn social history gallery.

Cultural & literary history gallery showcases hero stones of Pullimaankombai as pictures.

Details of all factors which decide the economy of the people of Theni District like types of soils and different crops grown like sugarcane, Bodi silk cotton, Periyakulam mango, Chinnamannur betel leaves, Cumbum valley grapes, Kurangani coffee, Areccanut, Bodinaickkanur cardamom, Meghamalai tea, Vadugapatti garlic market are displayed as photography and specimens in the economic history gallery.

In industrial history gallery various important industries and their products like sugar factories, sakkampatti sarees, handloom model, power generation from wind mills, metal wares, Arecca stem products, Block printed sarees made in Subbalapuram and few blocks are displayed here.

FEW IMPORTANT EXHIBITS :

  • Kadam
    Kadam

    Kadam is a South Indian Carnatic percussion musical instrument. Gadam is made in Tamilnadu at Sivagangai district in a place called Manamadurai. Most of the musical instruments are made using animal skins. But all five natural elements come together in the making of Kadam. The clay from earth is shaped using water, dried by air and sunlight from space and finally completed by fire.

    The Kadam on display here was gifted by Mr.Ramesh from Manamadurai, who is a fourth generation Kadam manufacturer.

  • Chadas
    Chadas

    ‘Chadas’ a water lifting device, which was used in the yore by the agrarian society to list water from wells for irrigation using animal draught power, holds a proud place in the Government Museum at Andipatti of Theni District.

    The antique ‘Chadas’, which is known as ‘Kamalai’ in Tamil on display looked at a little rusty and caught the attention of visitors in the Museum. It is an ancient and simple device, which is the days of yore was the most sought after by farmers. It has now become more or less obsolete. But with the advent of modern technology, Chadas was swapped out and replaced with various upgrades in irrigation methods and water management sources.

    This priceless antique was offered by Perumal, a farmer from Nakkalakkotai village. The younger generation should be aware of our history and its primary value lay in the exposure to such ancient irrigation system and traditional practice on farm lands.

  • Nethaji’s Philco Radio
    Nethaji’s Philco Radio

    The Radio displayed in Andipatti Govt. Museum was famous during 1945’s. This radio was used by Nethaji Subash Chandrabose during his stay in Singapore Palace in 1945. This detail is inscribed in the Radio along with his mantra for victory ‘Jai Hind’. This Radio was manufactured by Philco Radio Company which was a very popular one during 19th century.
