Coimbatore Museum is located at Nehru stadium shopping complex opposite in the V.O.C. Park Zoo. It was opened as 9th District Museum in the year 1990. This Museum exhibits objects of Art and Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Botany and Zoology disciplines. Most important exhibits of this Museum are the Megalithic burial potteries and stone Sculptures, which were collected from different parts of this district.

Visitors can have the Knowledge of history of Coimbatore district from as early as Paleolithic period through Neolithic and Megalithic to modern period by the exhibits displayed here. Mesolithic tools collected from vannathankari, and Neolithic stone tools collected from Poluvampatti are displayed.

Coimbatore district was inhabited by Megalithic people after the Neolithic culture. Megalithic culture in this district was understood by its different types of burial systems (Four footed urn, simple burial urn) the presence of black and red ware potteries. In this Museum different types of megalithic potteries are from Udmalaipet, Kalapatti.

Mesolithic stone tools, calcimined bone remains of both animals, human beings acquired through field exploration from vannathankari site near Thakkalur, Kamanayakkanpalayam via Avinashi are also display for Pre history showcase.

Stone sculptures from varies part of district collected Stone sculptures of a mother goddess seated on cattle - Maheswari - Bodipalayam (18th century AD), a hero stone with three tire, saptha Kannimar (19th century AD), and Naika king and Queen (16th century AD), Kali Vagitholu village (18th century AD) and Inscribed stone slabs containing the details of commercial guild of Veerarajendra Chola period, are also displayed in this Museum.

Wood carvings displayed here includes Kannappa nayanar, Siva, and Parvathi have been brought from Avinashilingeshwarar Temple car and Some paintings of contemporary art displayed here records the trend of modern art.

Coimbatore district presents three types of tribal people there Irula, Kadar and Malasar Tribal artifacts display in tribal's showcases.

A good palm leaf Manuscripts (Nilgiri land documents and medicinal) collection found.

Specimens of Rocks, Minerals and fossils of Geology Biological stuffing specimens (Vulture, Owlets, Skulls, Bull skeleton, etc,) and other objects attract both common people and students. So you are welcome to Coimbatore Museum to know about the history, art and cultural wealth of this District.

    Kannappa Nayanar, the outcast hunter who gave his eyes to Siva. He stands in an attitude of prayer, wearing sandals and carrying a bow and arrow.
