Karur museum was opened to the public in the year 2000. The specimens include, bronze items, metal-ware objects, terracotta, musical instruments, coins of Chera, Chola, Pandya, Vijayangara, Nayaks, British etc., cannon, rocks, minerals, fossils, botanical specimens, medicinal plants, marine specimens such as molluscan shells, corals, conches etc. The educational activities of this museum include special exhibitions, popular lectures, monthly lectures, training programs / competitions to school / college students, etc.

  • Molluscan Shells
    Molluscan Shells

    Molluscan shells are extensively used inmaking of ornaments such as rings, bangles, bracelets, necklaces etc. They have been valued as a rich source of Calcium Carbonate & used in the manufacture of Lime & in agriculture for enriching the soil. The helmet shells are largely used for Cameo Carving, a well-flourished skilled industry in Italy.

    Tambura - Musical Instrument

    Tamburais one of the classical instruments of stringed variety. It is used for drone accompaniment & it has many varieties. It gives a powerful & perfect base for human vocal songs. The best Tamburas are made of jack wood over a hallowed out gourd. The overall length of the instrument varies from three & half to five feet. The exhibited Tambura belongs to 17th century AD.
