Government museum Erode is located at VOC Park campus in Erode. The Museum was opened to the public in the year 1987. The important exhibits are Kongu chola inscriptions, Kannada stone inscriptions, Kongu Chola sculptures, Nayak sculptures, Herostones, Tanjore Paintings, Manuscripts, Geological objects, Kodumanal antiques and pre-history items. It has both Botanical and Zoological specimens also.
Visitors can have the knowledge of history of Erode district as early as megalithic period to modern period by the exhibits displayed here. From Megalithic culture in this district was understood by its burial urn from Pethampalayam, Erode District. Megalithic potteries from P.Mettupalayam and Koduveri are also displayed here.
Most important exhibits of this museum are Kodumanal objects. The place kodumanal is at 45 KM distance from Erode. It was once a flourishing ancient trade city, known as Kodumanam (Sangam literature paththu pattu mentioned about Kodumanam). It is located on the northern banks of Noyyal river a tributary of the Cauvery. Kodumanal excavation had brought to light two cultural periods, viz., 1. Megalithic period 2. Early historic period. The inhabitants of this destroyed ancient city were highly skilled craftsmen, who were specialized in making beeds and high quality iron. The city Kodumanam played major role in Indo-Roman trade relations. Tamil Brahmi scripts are found in the potsherds excavated here.
Sangam literature describe the erection of Herostones elaborately. To commemorate the heroic deeds of the warrior who died in the battlefield herostones were erected. Three tier herostones from Burgur and Thalavadi are displayed here. Three tier herostone is the special feature of Karnataka culture.
The tribal objects of Sholaga portray the life style of the Sholaga tribe people living in Burgur hills, 80 kms from Erode.
The wood carvings displayed here were collected from Temple cars of different places of Tamilnadu. Some paintings of contemporary art displayed here records the trend of modern art.
Crocodile Diorama showcase, the great Indian bustard birds, Horn of various animals, Wet Zoological specimens, South Indian timbers, leather puppets, minerals, fossils, and stamps are other objects attract both common people and students.
ERODE MUSEUM is housed in Cox reading room built in the year 1927, belongs to the Erode municipal corporation.
