Sivaganga Government Museum was established on 10.03.1998 as 14th district museum to visualize the Sivaganga district historical significance. This museum has rich pre-historic antiquities as this district has been since pre-history. It has rich collections in sections like Archaeology, Anthropology, Numismatics, Art, Zoology, Botany, Geology and Chemical Conservation. In Archaeology, exhibits of bronzes of saivites and vaishnavites, wood carvings, stone sculptures, palm leaves and metal wares have been displayed well. There is a garden in which stone sculptures with cement pedestals are displayed, attracting more number of visitors. In Anthropology section, Pre-historic palaeo-lithic stone tools like hand axes, cleavers, scrapers and mega lithic burial urns, potteries, pot sherds are displayed. Swords, guns, knives and boomerangs, made of wood and metal, indigenous weapons of Sivaganga, objects of kattu nayakkans, local tribes, mud made musical instruments collected locally are under display. In Numismatics section, model coins of Cholas, stamps and coins collected locally are displayed well. Modern paintings have been displayed in Art section. With regard to Zoology section, specimens of wet and dry preservation are displayed. One interesting specimen is the land tortoise as dry specimen. One diorama show case shows marine eco system in which marine forms like sponges, corals, sea horses and fishes are displayed. In Botany, various types of timbers in Economic Botany and medicinal plants in Systematic Botany are also displayed. In Geology section, various types of rocks, minerals and wood fossils have been displayed. Photographs showing the conditions before and after chemical conservation. Besides these, one interesting thing is the musical stone, collected from Forest department, in which Sarigamapadani ( 7 notes ) can be played, fascinating more number of visitors.
