The Museum was established in 1989 as 8th district museum to visualize the Udhagamandalam district significance. While the Museum continued to grow its collection through field collection, loan transfer and gifts. This museum has Pre- History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Numismatics, Ethnology, Geology, Agricultural implements, Botany and Zoology. In Pre- History exhibits Megalithic artifacts Nilgiris megalithic pottery and postured of megalithic and Copper vessel also display. In Archaeology exhibits of stone sculptures, wood carvings and metal wear objects also displayed, in anthropology section leather puppets, palm leave manuscripts and musical instruments also display, Indigenous Tribal artifacts of Nilgiri district, Todas, Kotas, Paniya, Irula and Kurumba like Toda Hut model, ceremonial artifact, house hold objects also displayed and Toads embroidery traditional cloth materials like table cloth, stoles, skirts and Purses , besides the traditional Puthukuli (shawl) also present. Kotas tribe artifact like Agricultural iron implements and terracotta objects also displayed. Paniya tribe artifact like Fish catching Objects and house hold object also displayed. Kurumbas tribe traditional musical instruments like Buguri, Hunting Materials like bow and arrows also displayed. In Numismatics section like model coins of Cholas and modern coins collected locally are displayed well. Some of Nilgiris district rock and cave art model Paper painting and Nilgiris important place old view photo copies displayed in the introductory gallery. In zoological dry specimens like Panther, Birds, Eagle, Varanus, Fish, Sponges, Corals, Bison head, Bear head, Skeleton of horse, vulture, Hornbill and other zoological specimens display. In Botanical objects like Nilgiris district flora and various timbers also displayed. In Geology showcase various types of rocks and minerals have been display and other objects attract both common people and students.   • Nilgiris megalithic pottery
    Nilgiris megalithic pottery

    The Megalithic pottery of the Nilgiris include mostly the coarse, dull red ware besides lids (as handles) in terra cotta shaped with figurines of humans, animals, birds, plants, and inanimate object.

    The traditional garment of a Toda is known as put-kuli, a thick white cotton cloth with red and blue strips which is embellished further with embroidery by Toda women is thrown around the body by men and women like 'Roman Toga' (Shawl).
